My Comfort Games: StarCraft II

It’s been over 14 years since StarCraft II was released, and nearly a decade since its last expansion, Legacy of the Void. While many StarCraft and RTS fans hold the original StarCraft in higher regard, even after its remastered version by Blizzard, I personally prefer StarCraft II. The newer game offers a much smoother experience, with significantly improved graphics and sound effects. After playing StarCraft II, I find some of the original game’s sound effects hard to tolerate by comparison.

Why is the StarCraft II one of my comfort games? Althought the game can be complicated as the match time progresses and the more advanced units can be created, in essence (this is true for the original StarCraft too), the game has certain elegant simplicity. There is a certain comfort because of the familiarity with the game since I’ve been playing StarCraft in early 2000s, and it gives some nostalgic feeling that makes me feel like I’m living these times when I was much younger.

I’m not particularly great at this game either. I’m just an average-ranked player and make plenty of mistakes in many matches. But it’s the perfect way to unwind at the end of a workday. Whether I win and get a little ego boost, or lose and challenge myself to think differently, I always find myself coming back for a few matches to relax and recharge.
